The result page is answering more questions itself. Published estimates of how often a Google search now ends without a click range from around 60% to 68% depending on who measured and how, and Similarweb puts referral rates from AI Mode queries at roughly 1.6 to 2.5% against 17 to 19% for traditional search. The figures disagree. The direction does not.

Why the numbers contradict each other

You will see zero-click figures quoted anywhere between 60% and 93%. They are not all wrong. They are measuring different things, and anyone citing one without saying which has not read carefully.

All Google searches ending without a click to any site: commonly cited near 60%, with a Search Engine Land study putting it at 68% in early 2026.

AI Mode queries specifically: far higher, because AI Mode is designed to answer rather than route. Similarweb’s referral figures of 1.6 to 2.5% describe this, and are the most alarming-looking numbers in circulation.

Searches where an AI Overview appears: a middle case. Overviews do not appear on every query, and when they do, click-through drops sharply rather than to zero.

A business reading the 93% figure and concluding that search is finished has misread a narrow measurement as a general one. A business reading 60% and concluding nothing has changed has done the opposite. Neither is a basis for a budget.

We have been here before with a different set of statistics. Our piece on why one AI-readiness survey says 4% and another says 63% makes the same point: when two credible numbers disagree by that much, the definition is doing the work, not the data.

Why this lands harder in India

Two things make the Indian position distinct. India is reported to have roughly 100 million weekly ChatGPT users, second only to the United States, so a large share of commercial questions are being asked somewhere that was never a search engine. And Google runs AI Mode in Hindi plus seven more Indian languages, which means the answer-on-the-page behaviour is not confined to English queries.

For an Indian SMB that built its enquiry flow on ranking for a few commercial keywords, both of those erode the same channel at once.

The number to watch instead of traffic

Here is the part that stops this being purely bad news. Reporting on AI-search visitors consistently finds they convert at far higher rates than traditional search visitors, with one widely quoted figure putting it at over twenty times. Treat the exact multiple with suspicion, because sample sizes are small and attribution is hard. The mechanism, though, is plausible: someone who has already had their question answered and still clicks through is much further along than someone comparing ten blue links.

Which means the sensible response to falling clicks is not to chase the clicks back. It is to change what you measure. Sessions and rankings described a world where traffic was the product. Enquiries per thousand impressions, and revenue per enquiry, describe the one we are in.

If your impressions are flat, your clicks are down 30%, and your enquiry count is unchanged, you have not lost anything. You have lost the visitors who were never going to buy.

What to actually do

Separate branded from non-branded in Search Console before you panic. Branded clicks holding while non-branded falls is the signature of this shift. Branded falling too is a different and more serious problem.

Answer the question on your own page, in the first paragraph. Pages that state the answer plainly get cited by AI systems. Pages that withhold it to drive a scroll do not.

Put your facts where a machine can lift them. Specifications, prices, hours, coverage areas, structured data. Vagueness that a human reader forgives is simply not extractable.

Stop reporting sessions to your board. Report enquiries and qualified pipeline. If the only number that fell is one that was never revenue, say so in those terms.

Check whether you appear in the answers at all. Ask the systems your customers use the questions your customers ask, and see who gets named. It is crude and it is more informative than another rank-tracking report.

That work sits across content, structured data and measurement rather than in any single tool, which is how our digital marketing practice approaches it.

The honest caveat

Most of the figures in this article come from vendor studies and analytics panels rather than from Google, which does not publish click-through data. Panels skew towards the sites they can see. Vendors selling a solution to zero-click have an interest in the number being large.

So treat the specific percentages as weather rather than physics. The one measurement that is not subject to anyone’s incentives is your own Search Console export, compared year on year, split by branded and non-branded. Start there, and let the industry argue about whether it is 60% or 93%.

Sources

Search Engine Land, “Google zero-click searches reach 68% in early 2026: Study”.

Similarweb, “Zero-Click Marketing: What the 2026 Data Means” – AI Mode referral rates against traditional search.

Profit By Clix, “AI SEO for Indian Businesses: 2026 Guide” – Indian ChatGPT usage and AI Mode language coverage.

Frequently asked questions

<details class="faq-item">
My rankings are the same but traffic is down. What happened?

Most likely the result page is answering the query itself, through AI Overviews or AI Mode, so fewer people need to click. Check Search Console with branded and non-branded queries separated. Non-branded clicks falling while impressions hold is the typical signature.

</details>
<details class="faq-item">
What percentage of searches end without a click?

Estimates vary by what is being measured. Around 60% is commonly cited for all Google searches, with a Search Engine Land study reporting 68% in early 2026. Figures above 90% refer specifically to AI Mode queries, which are a subset. Anyone quoting a single number without saying which measurement it is should be read sceptically.

</details>
<details class="faq-item">
Is SEO dead?

No, but traffic volume has stopped being a useful goal. Visitors arriving from AI-mediated search are reported to convert at much higher rates, so the work shifts towards being citable and extractable rather than towards maximising sessions.

</details>
<details class="faq-item">
Does this affect Indian businesses differently?

Somewhat. India has a very large ChatGPT user base, reported as second only to the United States, and Google runs AI Mode in Hindi and seven further Indian languages, so the effect is not limited to English-language queries.

</details>
<details class="faq-item">
What should we report instead of sessions?

Enquiries per thousand impressions, and revenue per enquiry.
